How the Tank-to-Tank Method Works

Motorcycle fuel gauges—especially on analogue or twin-pod clusters like the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650—do not measure fuel volume linearly. The needle or digital bars may stay pinned at full for the first 90 kilometres, then plummet rapidly over the next 40 kilometres.

To get an indisputable, scientifically accurate reading:

1. Step 1: Fill the tank to the auto-cut or brim level at a petrol pump and reset your trip meter (Trip A) to 0.0 km.
2. Step 2: Ride normally through your typical daily commute or highway route until the tank is at least 50% depleted.
3. Step 3: Return to the petrol station and refill back to the exact same brim line.
4. Step 4: Note the exact litres refilled on the fuel pump dispensary display and the distance on Trip A.

Factors That Change Your Real Mileage

• Cruising Speed: On the GT650 twin, cruising at 80–90 km/h in 6th gear yields peak efficiency (~25 km/L). Pushing above 115 km/h increases aerodynamic drag exponentially, dropping mileage to ~21–22 km/L.
• City Stop-and-Go: Frequent clutch slippage and idling at traffic signals in urban centres like Ahmedabad drops efficiency to ~19.5–20.5 km/L.
• Cold Tyre Pressure: Underinflated tyres by just 3–4 PSI can increase rolling resistance and cost you 1.5–2 km/L across a tour.
• Luggage & Windshields: Heavy saddlebags and touring windscreens alter the motorcycle's frontal area, requiring more throttle opening at sustained highway speeds.
